Client: Green Earth
The title of the "Asanoha" furniture series, which destilat developed for the traditional Austrian company Grüne Erde, is based on the Japanese, stylised hemp leaf pattern of the same name.
The Asanoha series succeeds the very successful Green Earth product Ryokan, which to a large extent carries the Green Earth DNA - ecological sustainability and responsibility. In the meantime, however, with a somewhat dusty appearance. The new series should correspond to these Green Earth core values, but in a design language that appeals to new groups of buyers without scaring away the traditional clientele.
The reference to Japanese traditions and philosophy was taken over from the Ryokan concept.
While a typical Japanese plug-in connection was the symbol of this idea in the case of Ryokan, the Japanese reference was more freely associated constructively in the case of Asanoha.
The idea, both for the wardrobe and the bed, was to place a structurally necessary frame construction visibly on the outside and to enable tool-free assembly and disassembly with metal-free very sophisticated plug-in connections. This method refers to the Japanese craft tradition and philosophy.
The formal structure, consisting of the external frame construction and the inserted corpus, is additionally emphasised by the use of two different types of wood. Due to the strict Green Earth specifications, only uncoloured woods can be considered, so a very light knotless ash was chosen for the frame and a dark oak for the carcase.
With the implementation of the Asanoha pattern by means of milling techniques in wooden surfaces or as a woven fabric pattern, an additional formal accent was created that once again refers to the Japanese references.
In addition to the wardrobe and bed, a bedside cabinet was also designed. In a further development step, the Asanohna line will be expanded to include a chest of drawers.
