A visit to the beer paradise

Pleasure Stroll in the Bio.Garden.Eden

The Upper Austrian Regional Garden Show 2019 will cover an area of 15 hectares and will take place from May to October in the extensive grounds of the Premonstratensian monastery of Schlägl. The convent in the upper Mühlviertel has 800 years of history to tell - an area that has preserved many natural treasures and its characteristic originality to this day.

Along the Great Mill, which supplies fresh water from the Bohemian Forest for Austria's oldest monastery brewery, you can walk to the water playground, through the Island and Creation Garden to the Life Gardens and the Schlägl Terraces. If you like, you can hide in the labyrinth of the Stiftergarten or prove your marksmanship at the historic skittle alley. From there, it's not far to the Hop Cabinet and the Stiftsbrauerei, for whom we had the pleasure of designing the interior of their new visitor centre with shop, bar and tasting room by Arkade Architekten on the occasion of the garden show.

Beer has been brewed here for 400 years - from the simplest, natural ingredients. The approach of our interior design is just as clear, determined by the regional materials granite (in the form of terrazzo) and wood, and colourfully based on the ingredients water, hops and barley. The wood used was cut in the monastery's own sawmill - the shape of the bar and counter, which look like simple stacks of wood, is also reminiscent of this. The entire interior is solid and yet restrained in order to put the focus on what it is all about here - the beer, its tradition, its character and its enjoyment.
