Open-air living

Of green rooms that expand our homes

Being outside, listening to the birds chirping, falling asleep under the stars and firing up the barbecue on weekends - when it comes to living, the cottage in the countryside is still the number one destination for many Austrians. But outdoor living is not only possible in the countryside. The love of nature is also increasingly visible and noticeable in our cities - urban gardening is conquering balconies, courtyards, community gardens, roof or ground-level terraces. Everywhere, plants are nurtured and cared for, walls are planted with greenery, useful and ornamental plants are grown, because we humans simply feel good surrounded by trees, plants and flowers.

The summers of the last few years also offered plenty of opportunities to be outside. Those who have the opportunity not only take their afternoon coffee on the terrace, but spend a good part of the day in the green room. Summer kitchen, outdoor office, open-air lounge - there is also a corresponding vocabulary for the trend that has always been a tradition in Mediterranean countries.

The range of garden furniture is correspondingly large - all the major manufacturers launch their own outdoor collections, which are characterised by particularly resistant, water-repellent or quick-drying materials. In terms of design, all styles are represented and the quality of the outdoor furniture is just as high as that of its indoor counterparts.

But do a few flower troughs and a seating area make a terrace? destilat understands and designs the terrace as an equal spatial element that not only expands our view, but also our living space. Spaces must correspond with each other so that the boundaries between indoors and outdoors dissolve and merge into a coherent overall structure.
