Palma de Mallorca

A new façade and a façade concept based on aerated concrete blocks were developed for a new semi-detached house that was to be built in the immediate vicinity of Molinar’s busy promenade in Palma de Mallorca. The aim of the architectural concept was to shield off the client as effective as possible on the street side, but with a design approach that clearly distinguishes itself from the faceless architecture surrounding the house.

For this façade project destilat chose aerated concrete blocks, which reference a Mediterranean building traditions.

The building as a whole has a seemingly monolithic appearance due to the repetition of the aerated concrete blocks’ ornamental structure. All window openings are also concealed by this “second skin” and become almost invisible.

On the inside, the additional façade placed around the building provides the desired level of privacy and separation from the bustle of the outside world.

Only the entrance areas made of black burnished sheet steel clearly stand out from the rest of the façade and pierce through the wall’s structure. They emphasize the façade’s hermetic effect as well as the desire for privacy and retreat from the outside world due to their materiality.
