The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Wolfsburg

Year: 2019
Status: Loaded competition
Client: Volkswagen Immobilien GmbH

Right in the centre of the car city Wolfsburg, the Ritz-Carlton Group opened a 5-Star-Superior hotel, a haven of peace in the midst of a bustling business world. The circular complex is located directly at the Mittelland canal with a view of the listed power plant. It is characterised by its spacious outdoor areas, an elegant spa and several fine-dining restaurants.

destilat was invited to participate in the competition for the expansion of the breakfast room, including its adjacent terrace. The goal was to expand this area, make it more flexible for multifunctional use and create a pleasant atmosphere.

The design has a substantial impact on the existing architecture. destilat opened the ceiling with a rhombic construction along with vertical windows, as a contemporary interpretation of a traditional coffered ceiling. These windows flood the room with daylight and create a bright, open ambience. The distinctive ceiling grid extends towards the terrace, where it turns in an arbour element and harmoniously connects the outdoor area with the indoor area.

This dining area, which is called “Hafenterrasse” (“Harbour Terrace”) was a contentual starting point for creative associations. Conceptualities like traveling, ships, and desire are reflected playfully in this design – teakwood floors remind you of a ship’s deck and the “open ceiling” evokes the image of an open sky on the high seas. Guests are welcomed by a big, centrally placed open fireplace that gives the wide spatial structure its pleasant atmosphere. The huge buffet area with its flexible structure, the open show-kitchen and the individual seating areas are grouped this fireplace.
