What is beautiful
Feeling style at the Salone del Mobile 2019
They may not have invented style, but Italians have long known why beauty is important. Whether it's food, living or life in general - they know how to cultivate sophistication as uncomplicatedly as hardly anyone else.
In addition, craftsmanship is traditionally held in high regard - made in Italy is considered a guarantee for precise workmanship and the finest materials. The Salone del Mobile is also curated with this quality standard in mind - it is not for nothing that the Salone del Mobile furniture fair, which has been held annually since 1961, is considered the most important in the world.
Whereby furniture fair is almost too narrow a term for the impressive platform that was visited by 370,000 people from 188 nations in the few days of April. It is entire worlds that the more than a thousand international exhibitors stage to present their design identities and show which trends, materials and techniques they consider relevant and forward-looking. Classic, Design and xLux are the names of the categories interpreted by the who's who of interior design. Fashion giants such as Gucci, Hermes, Loewe and Cos showed their idea of a beautiful life, as did the technology group Google.
In addition to the main exhibition, the Salone del Mobile has been curating numerous satellite showrooms for years, which move into venerable palazzi or abandoned factory halls all over the city to present established brands or promising newcomers.
Not only we, but the whole of Milan is in a state of emergency at the time of the Salone, because it is important not to miss anything. Furniture, accessories, interiors and trade publications are on show, but basically it is above all moods and emotions that we bring back with us from our visit to Milan. After all, beauty is not a measurable quantity, but a feeling that people share with each other and that shows itself in the most diverse facets.
